The one on the left looks most correct to me.

The cap should have an "X" as shown in photo but paint black the same as the valve. Shade and gloss similar to that on the brake master cylinder. The "C" indicates it has been serviced.

Pretty sure it should have an X stamped into it - like this one on my '67:

What year is your car? The '66 and '67 judging guides both specify that the dust cover over the centering valve adjustment screw has an X stamp.

Yes, the 1963 to about 1973 Corvette control valve end caps are stamped with an "X". However, later Corvette valves, from ABOUT 1974 onward, were stamped with a "C". Why? Well, the centering spring changed. The "C" stamped valve has a 40 pound centering spring; I don't recall what the spring value was for the "X" valve. After October, 1982 the "C" stamped valves were also used for 1963-73 SERVICE.

Per the 1967 Chassis Overhaul Manual (page 9-25):

"NOTE: Corvette valve incorporates a 55-lb. centering spring which is physically but not functionally interchangeable with the Chevy II spring, which is a 30-lb. spring. The Corvette valve incorporating this spring is identified by an "X" stamped on the dust cover."

              Bob,

My car is a '69. My TIM&JG is in FL while I am in PA. My failing memory was telling me the cap had a "C" stamped into it. Now that I have been corrected, I will begin my search for a cap like the one in Paul's picture.

              Thanx to all who responded.

                Floyd,

If you find a source for that X stamped cap, please let me know as I need one also.

                Thanks.

                Jim

Re: Power Steering Valve Dust Cap

I have an early and a late 73. I bought the early one new in 73 and the late one last summer from the original owner. It has 23,000 miles on it. The early car has a C stamp and the late car has an X stamp. I know that the early car with the C stamp hasn't had the control valve serviced or replaced but I don't recall whether or not the cap could have fallen off and been replaced or not. I also have a 74 low mile(17000) that has the C stamp. I can't say for sure if anything has been touched on the 74 but what I did find interesting is that the C stamped ones also have the hose shield on the cap end of the valve. The X stamped late 73 (and also my 66) don't have the shield. The 73-74 judging guide says should have C stamp.
