61 clutch push rod to pin fit

    1961 vette 4sp

Question about the fit of the pin in the clutch pushrod.

Pin fits nicely thru the two clutch fork holes

The pin is 0368" while the hole in the end of the pushrod is 0.429".

That is a sloppy fit, however, the hole is concentric and not worn or egg shaped as you would expect.

When I look at an image of a rod end in one of the vette catalogs, the hole looks extra big and appears to be the same as the rod I have.

Is a sloppy pin to pushrod hole ft normal?

    Thanks,
    Joe

I measured the clutch push rod hole for my 100,000 mile '59. I get 0.41 in the non-wearing direction and 0.43 in the wearing direction. There is a spring that pre-loads the joint to eliminate the slop.

Bill, thanks for taking the time to make a measurement.

Does the operation of your clutch feel tight?

I'd just buy another rod but if he hole is as large on the new rod I'l just live with it.

        Joe:

My car has been off the road and disassembled for a long time, but I don't remember any clutch problems.

The slop is normal. This was the design. The anti rattle spring keeps tension on the rod's front part of the hole. Because there is no oilite bushing or sealed joint, the hole in the rod will wear when the grease dries out and gets washed away, and eventually become ovalled in shape. Even in this state, it'll last a long time, just lubricate on occasion. Just make sure the spring is there to keep the pedal freeplay consistent and plenty of grease when assembled and you'll get many years out of the parts.

Another area that needs plenty of grease is the clevis at the other end of the fork rod. Always grease it up before inserting into the z-bar. Then grease up the end and side of the z-bar lever, then attach the special clip, then more grease all over the clip.
