    Stu,
Did you try a good soak in Berrymans, works the black out when we do a carb?

Thanks Dom, I'll see if I can find some. I have a local independent auto parts store here that gets me all the good stuff. They deal almost exclusively wholesale and have connections to locate most any thing I need.

I got the carb all apart now with some effort on the float chamber and specially the metering block. Lots of white/off yellow corrosion crud with one plugged main jet. All the gaskets were baked on. I had to scrape them all off using my new small scraping tools bought at the winter meet. A good investment.

I had my 66 holley done by Philip and when I got it on the car the idle circuit was messed up so that the idle screws when turned in wouldn't kill the engine but turn them out and it would die. Sent it back to him for a rebuild and had the exact same problem again. I ended up spending $500 with a local carb guy who fixed it.

Phil did the following for me:

          1972 454 4spd carb
          1969 435 tri power carbs
          1970 440 six pack carbs
          1970 LS6 carb
          1970 Hemi cuda carbs

          worth EVERY penny !!!!!

All worked 100% correctly, looked 100% correct. Most of the carbs were present during a judged event and received zero deductions.

And he stands behind his work.

Honestly I don't know of a Quadrajet restorer that does excellent work all of the time. Jerry Luck used to, but that was at least a decade ago.

If anyone else has suggestions for you I hope they let us know.
My carb is still undergoing a cosmetic restoration at a local rebuilder.

We are wating for one more part to show up and then it gets in line to go to the replater.

I do feel confident the final product will be very nice. Will keep you posted. Best regards.

After I sent my carb back to him and he rebuilt it again, still didn't work he told me not to call him again. That's not standing behind is work.

Re: Current Carb Restoration Experts for cars going to judging

I've done an extensive search for "Berryman's" and it seems no one has it anymore. They all tell me it was the best product for carbs, but they have not seen it around for at least five years.

Anyone know of a good substitute? The Holley tri-power carbs I'm working on REALLY need a good cleaning.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

                    Stu,
I bought a substitute from NAPA and sent it back. Didn't work a bit, might have been a good mix in a drink.
I asked NAPA to order Berrymans and they did. I buy the 5 gallon size.
I live in the tree hugger state CA, and was suprised to get it. Also a new chain here had a special on it for $97 a 5gallon bucket. Starr Auto. The stuff is wicked and stinks, so I use it out doors and do not get any on my skin as it seems to absorb in your system.
Years ago there was a carb cleaner that worked better than Berrymans and that was banned. I saw a mechanic drop a part that he had on a wire. He reached in without gloves before I could stop him. He washed his hands & arm but could not get the smell or sweet taste off his skin. The skin om the top of his hand and up his arm turned black and flakes off.
That stuff is not sold any more but would clean a carb in 5min.

I used Phillip as well for a 7029215. Functions perfectly. I went with the street rebuild as my engine compartment is not restored. 2 years later the carb still looks and functions great.

Thanks Dom. I'll check with them. Did they indicate they had other sizes available, or whether they could order any other size??

                        Thanks again.

And that old stuff (I remember it in a white and orange bucket) would leave you with no carb if you left it in there over the weekend, and a lot less carb if left overnight. You had to keep the cover on it so it wouldn't stink up the shop. In school it once ate through the bottom of the metal bucket, but in fairness we didn't use it as often as a shop would; but we used it a lot more than most of us would at home.

Here it is: http://www.berrymanproducts.com/prod...parts-cleaner/ One local shop carries it. I find it's not as strong as it used to be, but it smells like the worst formaldehyde in the world, and the smell is impossible to remove from anything. Use big nitrile gloves when handling it.

i guess anything can happen.. no one can be 100% perfect :-)

I was just saying I have spent many thousands of dollars with him and for me - zero issues...

He bailed me out several times on other carb projects that were not for restored cars.
I used him to help me build race carbs when I used to run at English Town on NJ.
I only lived about 10 miles from his shop.
