    1972 Chassis Detailing/Stenciling/Marking

Well I took this week off to assemble my '72 chassis. Everything is ready to go...except...

I forgot to order the chassis detail kit for stenciling/marking, etc.. Can this detailing work be done after everything on the chassis is assembled?

One more question: I seem to remember reading somewhere that there is small stenciling on the trailing arms. Is this true and if so, what type of number was on it?

    Thanks.

    Hi Roger,
If you're ready to begin putting the chassis together, you're at a pretty nice point.
I really think any of the marking you may want to do can be be done with the chassis assembled, but before you put the body in place.
There have been discussions that ALL the marks observed, and put on to lists ,may not be present on ALL cars.
I believe there has been mention and photos of a date stamp on the trailing arm... is that what you're referring to?
    Regards,
    Alan

just one little bit of advise ...

remember that the frame was turned upside down when assembled. all the junk on the bottom side was facing top.
so when you paint inspection marks or daub paint on parts, be sure that the paint that runs, runs in the correct direction.

On your 72 (as on other years), the VIN stencil is down upside down too....

also - all cotter pins should have the bent ends facing down - when looking from the normal bottom side they should face up towards the body.
just bend the short end at a 90 to the castle nut and don't cut/trim either ends.

One of the repro parts place sells a kit that has all the correct length cotter pins and they are steel not what you get from the AutoZone.

Be shure you do the research on where your chassis [frame] stencil belongs. The later 72 had the stencil moved to the frame behind the right front wheel.

I am reading all this on chassis detailing, my question is isn't there some where on the frame where the VIN# is stamped? This is probably required for registration inspection. I don't think most if not all DMV's want a permanent VIN# not a stencil (Paint?).

on a 72' it is stamped into the DVR rear frame rail just about inline with the rear shock.
It os on top and can not be seen unless the body is off.

That date is when the trailing arm assemblies were assembled. White ink stamp. One side is right side up (looking at the car on a lift) and the other side is stamped up-side down. Don't ask me which is which, but Alan's picture may give you a clue. BTW: I think the chances of the chassis judges being able to see this with the car on the ground is remote, but I know to some people that doesn't matter.

Alan, Terry, thanks for that information. Does anyone know the details on the character dimensions on this stencil? If anyone has bought the chassis marking set from an online Corvette parts store does it come with this stencil?

                      Re: 1972 Chassis Detailing/Stenciling/Marking

                      Hi Roger,
The date on the trailing arms appears to be done with a stamp rather than a stencil.
I have a set of stamps on loan from another member that happens to be usable for my car in addition to his.
I'm sure he'd loan them to you, but the dates wouldn't be appropriate for your 72.
The characters are 5/16" high, and the total length of the characters is 1-13/16" long. I don't recognize the style of the font off hand, (maybe Helvetica?). My font book is at my office so I'll look tomorrow to make sure.
You can have a stamp made at various places on line or a local office supply store.
                      Regards,
                      Alan

Question, do you use the white stencil paint ? Would the stamping be upside down because the build was upside down ?
