    1954 Steering Wheel -Paint Removal

I am beginning preparations for the restoration of my steering wheel and started by putting a little Captain Lee's paint stripper on a small portion of the wheel. the paint softened up but I was not comfortable with the way the paint was coming off. It appears the paint was softened up but so was some of the rubber wheel itself. When I gently used a plastic scraper to remove the paint I could see some of the rubber was coming off as well so I called off that plan of attack.

Is the best way to remove the paint is to carefully sand it off?

    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John Lanning

I put mine in a blast cabinet and turn the pressure down and I blasted mine clean.
    I use media vs sand
    Then started fixing cracks.......

John, You are correct in going with sanding the material off the wheel. Its a long dirty job just stick with it.

I figured that sanding or light blasting may be the safer way to go..so I work the steering wheel a little bit and then patch a few holes in the body .... back to the steering wheel .... back to the body.. back to the ..

Fix cracks with two-part epoxy putty, perhaps?

Widen and deepen hairline cracks in order to fill? Seems like a shame to deepen a small crack but not sure how else to fill it? Perhaps the finest cracks will be taken care of by a primer/surfacer?

Yes you have to Vee out the cracks. Some suppliers sell steering wheel repair kits with the materials and instructions.

I blast the wheels - the V groove and fill all the cracks - which normally there are a ton
I use a 2k epoxy - you can buy it at ACE - called PC7 - mix A and B together - fill and sand
I am sure you could use VPA
I would not use body filler - just my opinion
I have done several of the 53-55 wheels - just takes time....
