Does anybody sell the steering box seal without buying a kit? I only need the shaft seal and a cover gasket. All my bearings and worm gear are in good condition. I just want to put a new seal and gasket on while I have the steering column out.

Re: 58 steering gear box seal
Brandon, I'm in the process of rebuilding one and have the entire kit. In the morning I'll check the part# on the seal to see if you could find one locally, maybe NAPA or a bearing supply shop near you. The gasket is available from most Corvette suppliers.

Re: 58 steering gear box seal
I bet they have it, if you click the "Buyers Guide" at the bottom of the link it list hundreds of applications. IIRC it's also used on the PS pumps as shaft seals.
I just checked the steering box I have here and the depth for the seal is about 0.440", so if you use the narrow seal just stop driving it in when you get to the outer flange and you should be good to go.
Some pics of the original fiber/paper? seal and some measurements for future reference.

Re: 58 steering gear box seal
Another alternative for the seal is National # 50515S . It's available from Rockauto.com if you have trouble finding it locally. The thickness of the National seal is .375".
Credit for the photo goes to Tom Parsons. It's from his great tutorial/ pictorial on 53-62 Corvette and 49-54 Pass car steering box rebuilding, ( found here: http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...hp?tid/225413/ ).Attached Files- Top

Re: 58 steering gear box seal
Napa had the 11067 seal but decided to order a national seal 50151-s from O'Rilley due to the depth of the seal.
I looked at the one installed in my steering box and the national 50151-s is installed in it. Thanks again for your help.- Top

Re: 58 steering gear box seal
Tom is also the C1 rear/differential man. I used his directions on rebuilding a 1960 steering gear, front suspension and adding a modern Eaton posi unit to a 1960 posi carrier. Excellent instruction as these were all first for me.
Thanks Tom
