What product is best, least messy to remove surface rust from rear spring and a few suspension components while on car? Have seen posts about vinegar or molasses/water mixture? Anyone use Griot's jell rust remover?

Re: on car rust removal
go to your local hardware store or lowes, home depot, etc. You can also get this sometimes at Advance, Auto Zone, Etc.
Anyways, its called EvapoRust. You can get it in quarts or gallons. On the car you can apply with a mist bottle, but you will need a paper towel to hold the product in place while the de-rust occurs. It works the best when you can remove the part and submerse it for a day or two. I have found it to not harm paint, chrome, or even old crayon and wax pencil markings.
Get ready, you will be amazed. This product works almost as good as industrial de-rust washers. Be creative with its use, it is harmless as far as I know.- Top

Re: on car rust removal
Bill,
Some times the rust remover can do more damage down the road. I sanded and brushed my driver then primed it with Rustolium followed with their semi gloss and it lasted and looks fine.
Some of the rust removers get trapped as you know and mess things up later. Just a thought.

Re: on car rust removal
Ok, Before we get off track, I have only endorsed one product because I have used it a lot. After the use of the Evaporust, there is a metal prep like protective finish that lasts a llllooong time when the parts are stored dry and indoors.
I agree that there are certain products that don't do so well, and have bad side effects. Try the evaporust, you will like it
Hey DOM, we posted at the same time AGAIN. Funny.- Top

Re: on car rust removal
Evaporust works best when small parts can be immersed in it overnight. Using it that way the stuff works wonders. I use it on all small steel parts.
You can mist it on larger parts, but the results will not be as good because the chemical requires time in order to do its thing. Get as much surface rust off of it as best you can first, so it does not have to work as hard. Be sure to keep it moist - don't let it dry out, and when finished rinse it thoroughly with water to remove all residue. That will then leave the raw steel subject to flash rust, so you have to deal with that too.

Re: on car rust removal
I'm talking about things like bottom of rear spring and spring hangers on outboard of spring;so, taking these parts off to soak is not what I want to do. Keeping this in mind what would you recommend as product and procedure?- Top

Re: on car rust removal
Bill, the only product I know of that works is Evaporust. I suggest you try it and see how it comes out. I don't know how bad your springs are rusted. A couple of photos would help. Some or most parts can be sand blasted, but not springs.
