Gerald, The clips can be removed, It will take patience and a small thin flat blade screwdriver. and tap to edges up very carefully just enough to remove the clip, to install you'll tap it over again carefully the stainless will dimple on outside so be gentile and place something under the lip, like a cloth.

If they are originals they would be spot welded in place on the metal ring. Second and later designs the clips had slots were in the metal ring that the clip slipped into. The direction the clip would slide into the slot indicated what generation the trim rings were. Others may have additional information on the subject.
Hi,
I believe Paul is correct.
68-74 rings have the clip inserted between the 2 layers of the steel band with a spot weld on each side of the clip to help hold it in place.
It appears to me that the spot welds are located so they join the 2 layers of the steel band but don't touch the clips. It does appear the band layers are held together very tightly and that getting the old clip out and the new clip in will be a bit of work. The configuration of the clip requires that it be slid out from between the band layers toward the center of the ring. This would eliminate the need to deal withe ring's outer crimp as Edward describes.
I believe the 75+ clips had 2 prongs that slid into slots in the steel band.
Regards,
Alan
Rick Miller has done this many times--he sells the service, if that's helpful.
Rick Miller also alters the outer crimp when he does many of his repairs. He then sells them for big bucks to buyers who are not informed that the crimp was altered. Any expeienced exterior judge will notice his alterations and judging disappointent occurs.
