69 Rear Shock Mount Bad ?

Changing the strut rods on the 69. When I pulled the R/S mount I noticed it does not "bite" the spindle support. I can insert it all the way in by hand. Only the "D" stops it from spinning. I have attached a picture of the mount. Do the teeth look worn out ? Do the spindle supports wear out ?

You can be sure that GM included the "knurled" area for a good reason. Is it absolutely critical to the function of the part? Probably not but I'd be reluctant to re-use a piece that was worn to the point that the "knurling" was completely ineffectual.

Something else to consider: I can see some amount of pitting on the shaft. There may also be more on the shock mount end of the shaft which cannot be seen in the photo. In my opinion, a shaft which shows significant pitting on either shaft end is not suitable for re-use. This shaft is a forged, critical suspension component with significant safety implications. Pitting can seriously weaken the shaft.

Many of these shafts will show significant corrosion-induced pitting, especially on the shock mount end.

As Joe stated I think the same but I would also add that the spindle housing and support could also be the problem. If the end were the shock/strut serration/knurls lock into could also be worn I would also check that.

Joe and Paul, thanks for your reply's. I'll get new lower shock mounts and hopefully they will bite into the spindle supports.

Larry, The reproduction mounts might be the trick you need as they seem to take a little more pressure to install.

Thanks Ed, I did read posts in the archive where people had trouble installing the repop mounts. That may be the solution. I will update this thread when the mounts arrive.
