I have purchased around 50 emblems and that was the only 6 ounce silver emblem I ever came across.

Here is why the original owner of the 1962 thinks he has a silver original emblem. He is partially accurate. The process used to make the emblems involved a layer of 24 karat gold with a layer of sterling silver behind the gold. Over many decades, the gold fades away until the sterling silver layer remains. If you look closely at original emblems, you can see various stages of gold deterioration.
24 karat gold & sterling silver? Really? Are you sure?

      Re: 1962 Trunk Emblems revisited

At regionals they judged my rear trunk emblem to be a silver service replacement and it was counted as not original. Once I went through national I replaced my service replacement with a gold "original" so that it was more correct. When I removed the service replacement the gasket was hanging down and had never (I believe) been in the correct position. This seemed like the kind of workmanship I would expect from an assembly line not a technician at a dealer. I've looked at my "service replacement" emblem and my tired old eyes can detect no trace of gold in it. Anyway it is interesting that a museum piece and my bowtie car both had silver trunk emblems.

To add to this discussion in support that Silver Trunk Emblems did in fact come as original equipment on some 1962 Corvettes straight from the factory, consider the following.

        these 1962 Corvettes.

I too have a 1962 Corvette that had the front nose emblem missing when I purchased the car in 1963 in Trenton N.J. which had approximately 8000 miles on it. The car is still missing the emblem to this day and does not have any mounting holes. There is not any signs that the holes ever existed. The car was built in March of 1962.Tom I.

            Tom,

Leon caught so much flack about that missing emblem at shows he attended and from the judging community that he finally went out and bought a nose emblem, drilled the holes, and destroyed the originality of his car.

Yes it is. These cars are not all exact clones of each other, some strange things went on on the assembly line to get cars out the door. GMs purpose was to make money and to do that they had to move product.
