Is there a way to gauge how much rust on a set of rear springs would be acceptable or safe to reuse? Is any pitting acceptable? I would link pictures but I can't get the manager to load my pictures anymore, at one time it would.
Dale
Without pictures my crystal ball gets real cloudy, but I would say: Surface rust = just remove it and refinish the spring and don't worry.
Pits = new spring leaf or leaves. Pitting will cause cracks to develop as the spring flexes.
Dale, Had a similar problem loading photos. Got help from this site. Go to "tools" pull down menu on the bar at the top of this screen. Click on "compatibility settings" and place "ncrs.org" on the list. You should be good to go.
Looks like surface rust to me. Take it apart for a complete inspection. Ah, prior to that check the free arch of the spring. I believe it should be somewhere between 10.5 and 11.5 inches.
Take it apart as Harry says. I had one that looked fine as yours does but disassembly uncovered two leafs that were in two pieces. Kinda had an 11 leaf spring.....
Take the spring apart and glass bead. Check for pits, cracks, etc under the liners. Order a new set of liners from Bair's. Assemble spring and then check for the arch. The spring will act very differently with new spring liners.
