    Help with alternator for 63

In the quest to put the right parts back on my 63, 340hp engine I discovered my alternator is incorrect (after I had it completely rebuilt)

currently I have a 1100834 unit and I understand I should have a 1100628. I found someone who has the right 628 housings with correct dates but there are no guts.

Question. Can the guts of my fresh 1100834 be used to rebuild the correct 1100628 housings?

and if so who would Be a trusted source to send the parts off to for a proper " correct" remanufacture?

    thanks for any help

    best

        Donald,

The alternator fan is different for 63 cars. I know the style of the fan blades changed for 1964 & 65 then again in 66 & 67 depending on hp engine hp rating. I will see if I can find a picture or someone else may post one for you.

What date are you looking for.

Thanks all; the housings I have found are dated "D" April which works for my May car. I wonder if there is a place to send all my parts and get back the correct unit rebuilt with right fan and any other parts I'm missing??

With these alternators, it's all about the case halves. The guts from just about any DN-series alternator can be installed. Keep in mind, though, that you want the guts from an equally amp-rated alternator if the alternator is to perform like the original.

As far as building one from the pieces, it's quite easy. The procedure is as described in the factory service manual except that all you'll be doing is the assembly without dis-assembly.

Thanks Joe. Looks like both the one I have and the 1100628 are 37A. So I should be good

                    All

i got my used alternator parts in. They look pretty good for the age.

It would appear I can use the guts from my newly rebuilt one with the correct outer shell.

My question is what exactly I should do with the housings to make them look new but also correct.

Does anyone have some pics of a dead nuts correct unit? Or can advise me on how to get there?

Also, I got an extra fan unit. Is it the right one. Does not look exactly the same as the one posted earlier in the thread.

                    Thanks for any help.

Don't forget that the rear half of the case for 63 is different. Has slots all the way around. There is no hole to place the plastic "pop in" retainer for the wiring harness as you see in 64 and up alternators. Tried to upload a pic, but cannot do it.Chuck

Here is a close up of the rear casing. I think I understand what is being described as correct. Can someone please verify.

Do I have the right fan? If not where can I get one? Thanks

As Chuck noted what you have pictured is incorrect, that is not a 63 Corvette alternator back half.

Here's a pic of the correct rear case. Notice... all slots. NO hole for the push in clip as is shown in your picture.

The correct fan is shown in a post above.

Had to switch to Safari to load pictures. IE wouldn't work.

Your pic shows a hole at roughly 9:00 o'clock. That is not correct for 63.
