Re: C2 64 Steel wheel identification help
Thomas,
My money is that it's a service replacement over the counter wheel, (K) would be Kelsey (1) would be the plant. Does the back taper like a 63 wheel?- Top

Re: C2 64 Steel wheel identification help
According to Chevrolet Parts History (for service parts, not assembly line parts) the 63 Corvette wheel, GM # 3825686, was replaced with GM # 3834127 in Jan. 1963 which was then replaced with GM # 3839814 in October 1963 which was then replaced with GM # 3838080 in May 1966.
Up until about 1966 or so the Kelsey-Hayes wheels were date coded on the "inside" which could not be seen with a mounted tire. After that the Kelsey-Hayes wheels were then date coded in the vicinity of valve hole. Years ago I bought replacement 15" X 5 1/2" wheels (GM # 3838080) at my local Chevrolet dealer stamped "K 1 86" and "1" valve hole "7" (January 7, 1986). The 3838080 wheel does not have the same cross section as the 3825686, 3834127, and 3839814 wheels.
The 3825686, 3834127, and 3838080 wheels have a hub hole diameter of 2 25/32" (2.78") while the 3839814 wheel has a 2 29/32" (2.91") diameter hub hole. The 3839814 also has a small hole (about 1/8" diameter) in one of the 5 raised areas (between the lug holes) on the front face. I have no idea of what the purpose of this 1/8" dia. hole.
