1966 non-tele turn signal parts; question of correct GM part number
1966 non-tele turn signal parts; question of correct GM part number
I've found two GM part numbers for the actuator plate/cancel cam part of the '66 non-tele turn signal switch. One is GM #5957015; the other is GM #5955189. Does anyone know if only one or both of those is correct for '66 Corvette? If both will function, does anyone know how they differ?

GM #5955189 is applicable to 1964 Corvettes. GM #5957015 is applicable to 1965-67 Corvettes.

Joe,
An error in the parts book (1977) shows the 5955189 as 64 and 5957015 as 64-67. As we know the 64-66 without tele switch was the same and the 67 switch was a whole different ballgame. The 5957015 will fit perfectly in the 64-66 switch.

Joe R.,
Thanks for the correction. Yes, I knew '67 was different and I should have caught that. Any idea what 5955189 is correct for, if not for '64 Corvette? '63 Corvette?
Re: 1966 non-tele turn signal parts; question of correct GM part number
Gary,
The 63 was s whole different design and used the switch for a 63 passenger car. It was down on the column with a wire running from the steering bell.
That might be the n umber for the entire switch. Maybe Joe L. can find it's use.

I don't know that there was an error here. From 1964 through early 1969 GM cataloged the GM #5955189 as the plate for 1964-67 Corvettes. Sometime in late 1969 things changed. From that time onward, right through their discontinuation inthe last several years, the GM #5955189 was cataloged only for 1964 and the GM #5957015 was cataloged as the part in question for 1965-67 Corvettes.
My assumption is that this was not an error. My expectation is that GM found that there was some problem when the 5955189 was used for 65-67 applications and, albeit belatedly, released the 5957015 for the 1965-67 applications. Can the 2 parts be used interchangeably? I don't know. Possibly.
Re: 1966 non-tele turn signal parts; question of correct GM part number
Joe,
I really don't have a clue what the 5955189 is but the 5957015 is the plastic piece that the directional lever is attached to. It's fixed to the plate by a screw so it will pivot both right and left. It's white plastic and has two locks that holds the turn switch on until it's released either by hand or mechanical when the wheel is straightened back forward. It is used on all 64-66 directional switches without tele as I have changed them numerous times thru the years. The ears break off and the switch won't hold. It cannot be used on a 67 as the 67 directional switch is completely different. Sorry if this explanation is clear as mud but it's all I know.

The GM #5955189 and GM #5957015 are very similar, practically identical even. I have NOS examples of both but I have not the ambition to dig them out right now to scrutinize them.
If the 5957015 does not work for 1967 then I don't know what part does unless it was part of the switch assembly and not sold separately. The 5957015 is the only "plate" that GM ever cataloged for a 1967.
Re: 1966 non-tele turn signal parts; question of correct GM part number
Joe,
You are correct as the 67 equivelent part is not replaceable and comes only as an assembly. The switch assembly is the same for the 67 and 68 Corvettes. The part in the 67 is quite a bit less heavy duty and one reason that 67 and 68 owners have such trouble with the switch assembly.
Re: 1966 non-tele turn signal parts; question of correct GM part number
Here's a couple of pics of the turn signal switch assy. off my 396. Replaced with newer unit (GM box dated '75), and transferred my original wire harness over to the new unit, as the service colors are different. Also used the new upper bearing in the 910821 assy, but re-used the cam from my original as it was the same light color, and the replacement was black.
I looked closely at this switch body and it seems to be a single "casting", and if so, must qualify as the most complex moulding ever manufactured.
Notice the part # on the plate (?) 5957014; one digit less than the part being discussed above.
