    Natural Finish Hardware

What is the best way to keep natural finish nuts/bolts from rusting besides using a clear paint. Is there any way to finish them which is more 'permanent?'

aren't they always finished with zinc (or cad or some other finish to protect them)?

Some are natural unplated steel. But a zinc plate that is aged will be acceptable to most looking at it. In many cases GM used hardware that was naked as well as zinc plate in the same application. Just do not chromate treat the hardware as that is way too brite. I use never seize as a fast and easy rust preventative. But you need to wipe just about all of it off so it looks realistic. But I will keep your hardware nice for a couple years with mild driving. There are commercial available products that do a better job.

I agree............and I personally use a mist coat of satin clear lacquer for many bolts. Eastwood also has a satin clear for metals that works well. Quanta's Prelube-6 is what I use to keep the engine pad rust free on my car. It should also work well for bolts, but will not last forever and must be (re)applied every few years.

Something that has worked well for me is use the silver anti-seize compound. Wipe it on, let it set for a few minutes, wipe it off and you're done. Work good, last long time.

Larry, when did you last purchase Prelube-6 from Quanta? A search on their website returns "Product not found." I purchased some from Ecklers years ago and it was great stuff, but its not found on their site either. A Google search yielded Prelube-6 Cable Lubricant at Champion Radio - $12.95 + $8.00 shipping for a 12oz can. Anyone know of another source?

I also use the anti-seize compound for certain bolts and nuts. But, I have had great results with gun oil. I take the gun oil out of the can that the oil comes in and then put it in a mist bottle to address the other natural finishes with great results.

I purchased 2 spray cans from Quanta about 3-4 years ago. I don't use much anymore.............just on a few things.

Quanta discontinued the zinc based rear spring coating about 8-10 years ago due to environmental regs. Perhaps Prelube-6 suffered the same fate. I would buy a few cans if you find it. My remaining two cans are 12 oz each and were manufactured by the Grignard Company of Somerset, New Jersey 08873. The phone number is/was (732) 805-5600.

EDIT: Here is a link to the company website. Dated 2012. Appears the product is still available. http://www.grignard.com/Wire-Rope-Lubricants/

I bought some of the RPM last July. I put it on several freshly blasted parts and they still look good, but they are in the garage. As a test I also blasted a defective 67 rear shock mount and treated it with the RPM. Then I left it outside in the weather and so far it still looks like I just blasted it. There is one very small spot of rust that started almost right away, but I think that I just didn't coat that spot enough. I will see how it looks after it sits outside all winter. So far I think it is a good product. if anyone wants more info, here is a link to their web site: http://www.npdlink.com/store/content...ns/909-11a.pdf.

We purchased some from Champion earlier this year. The can labels are quite different from what I purchased from Quanta over the years. I have yet to actually spray it and see if it looks and smells the same.
