    68 427 motor

Im trying to see what motor this 427 out of a 68 Vette is. Its a 4 bolt main. the # on the front pss side reads, T10062BN
and the one on the back drivers reads FZ18537. No serial # is on it after block was decked

    Tony-----

I can't tell you what it is but I can tell you what it's not. It's not an engine originally installed in a 1968 Corvette or, for that matter, any other year Corvette.

The fact that it has a Tonawanda assembly code stamping of some sort on the stamp pad but no VIN derivative is much more indicative of an engine that never had a VIN derivative stamping. If the block had been decked, it's highly likely that both the VIN and engine code would have gone.

I suspect that this is an engine that started life as a marine, industrial, or SERVICE engine assembly.

Thank you very much. With the # on the drivers side rear it was comming up 1968 Corvette 427,but that T was the plant showing it could be a marine block too. Thanks for your help!!

I have no information that relates the "FZ18537" to a 1968 Corvette application.

The "T" prefix on the passenger side stamp pad indicates an engine machined and assembled at the Tonawanda, NY engine plant. All big block engines ever used in any application were machined and assembled at Tonawanda. All big blocks through 1984 were also cast at Tonawanda.

Yes, I will get the web site if you want but it showed a 1968 corvette. But it also said 390,400 435hp. I didnt think a 390 came 4bolt main. Not sure if the 400 came 4 bolt either thats why im inquireing.I had a friend look in a book he has and he said its from a 68 Vette, and said if its a 4 bolt block thats a good sign. Do you know if the internals are the same from a 400 to a 435. I know the motor had a Tri Power on it before and he sold it for a 4 barrel 750 holley.

Most engine internal parts are different between the L-68 (400 HP) and the L-71 (435 HP).

Are you sure it's a 4 bolt main block? Even if it is, there were LOTS of non-Corvette 4 bolt main blocks. What is the casting number and casting date of the block. The casting number will be found on the block on the bellhousing flange (i.e. look down behind the heads to see it). The casting date will be either on the bellhousing flange (opposite side from casting number) or on the passenger side of the block.
