67 HL Motor Alarm Bulb Issue

Net Issue: HL Warning Alarm Bulb - is GE bulb #257 and GE#1847 the same.
    Details:
After I removed my instrument cluster I checked all the bulbs. One bulb that failed was the blinking HL alarm bulb. The bulb was GE #1847. This the first time the cluster was out of the car and the HL alarm has always worked (blinked when bucket not fully turned). I did not have a #1847 in the set I purchased from Lectric Limited but it did included GE#257 for HL motor warning bulb. The 67 Owner Manual lists bulb#257 for HL warning.

I want to be sure I put the correct bulb in before I re-install the cluster. Thanks for any help or clarification you can provide.

    Ron:

The #257 is the correct blinking bulb. Current #257 bulbs are not the old GE or Westinghouse ones, but are made in China. They may or may not work correctly. Make certain that you test before installing. If you are patient or search, GE and/or Westinghouse #257 blinking bulbs are still available on Ebay or from other sources such as pinball machine lights or model train lights supply houses.

The bulb # 1847 shows up as a 6 volt non-blinking bulb. Perhaps you meant # 1816, which is the non-blinking bulb for the near-by brake alarm.

Below is a photo of GE#1847. It is the original bulb I took out of the top middle section of the cluster left slot for HL alarm. It blinked whenever the buckets were not fully turned. This is the first time the cluster and bulb have been out of the car that I purchased new and owned since it was delivered to me in 67. I broke the bulb after taking it out but you can see it is not the typical 1813 (light only bulb). It has a different shape from the China made #257 bulb but evidently functions the same.

        Ron,

These are the bulbs you need for the car, be careful what you buy as it's a hard area to reach if you have to change. From my memory the 257 bulb was in my 67 and I was the first to remove the I/C.

          Ron:

I did a significant Google Search for GE #1847 blinking bulb, and there is NO MENTION OF ONE ON THE INTERNET. Perhaps it was a GE blinking bulb in the 1960's and was discontinued, and later the number was re-used. ALL of this number bulbs today (and some look very old) are for a 6 volt non-blinking. Anyway, the Owners Manual and Chevrolet Service Manual for 1967 Corvette show only the #257. So just use it and be happy. Try and buy GE/Westinghouse NOS if possible.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going with the #257. It tested OK so there is no reason to look for a #1847.
