Upper Left Cutout on 1966 Corvette Radiator Shroud

The 1966 corvette radiator shroud on both small and big block cars has a kind of cutout on the upper left (driver side) side. What is the purpose of this unusually shaped cutout. Is something supposed to pass through it. The 65 and prior shrouds are not that same configuration.

My best guess is for the cooling of the alternator.
