    Idle solenoid 1114418 vs 1114421

Is there a difference between the 1114421 service and the 1114418 OEM idle solenoid? They look different on the bottom or back, in that the plastic cap on the OEM one obstructs the rod. I noticed from the picture of Russ Slifer's ( need picture of 1968 427/390 vacuum advance line) 4418to be the same as mine and have that cap type and not open plastic cover. Also that rubber cover over the connector is not on some OEM references, any thoughts on if the rubber cover was an add on to later solenoids?

The GM #1114418 was available in SERVICE until February, 1968. At that time, it was replaced by the GM #1114421.

It's unusual that a part would be discontinued from SERVICE and replaced by another but the discontinued part remain used in PRODUCTION for well after that time. In general, the time when a part replaces another occurs in PRODUCTION prior to the time it is replaced in SERVICE. That's not always the case, though, and this may be one of those exceptions.

Joe, Is there a way of knowing if the solenoid was installed in production with that rubber boot on the back of the solenoid, as sold in reproduction today? JM calls for boot but in many places it is absent. Dale

The only way I know of is to observe known-original cars with solenoids.
