    Carb cleaner question?

I bought a 77 with 4,208 miles on it a few months ago. The car runs a bit ruff till it gets warm. I think the carb may have a bit of gum in it. Without rebuilding it, what is the best carb cleaner? What product that can be put in the gas tank will help? Thank you for any ideas.

Mr. Spears asked how I got this car. It is not a big deal, I got it at the January Mecum auction in Orlando. It was listed as a two owner car. It was a three owner and two dealer car after I checked it out. It got Bloomington Gold, Bloomington Survivor and Bloomington Benchmark in June of 2011. I will have it at the Florida Chapter meet this November and then in January I will have it at the Regional down here.

            Ken,

Just for s***s and giggles try spraying chemtool or something similar at the bottom of the carb by the gasket. If the idle picks up, it is just a gasket.

The reason I bring this up is, you said it runs better after it warms up. When a car warms up it expands a bit closing any gaps and or leaks.

Also, double check and make sure all your vacuum lines are hooked up correct. For example: If two of the TCS hoses are switched, the timing can open to the atmosphere as soon as it warms up.

Enjoy the car and congrats on such a cool toy.

            Monte

I have had the best luck of cleaning out a carb with a few tanks of Shell gasoline. This goes back to the 60s.
