I am about to reassemble the out side AC box for dads 67. and looking at the supplied foam insulation from the repro house. I realized how thin it is and how on earth it can make any difference when it sits that close to the number 8 cylinder on a BB. has anyone used a better insulation like found in the HVAC service. that thin fiberglass stuff with foil back. will that fit inside the box? since I did not take it apart I have no clue on what it looked like inside before.

Re: mid year out side firewall AC box insulation
Keith,
I think the original foam is refered to as a high density closed cell. It should be compressed about 1/8" or so in the original application and seals well. It is a firmer durometer than the typical repop stuff. Some of which is very supple open cell type.........total wrong.
I have been lucky in that I have been able to reuse the originals on my cars.- Top

Re: mid year out side firewall AC box insulation
Well when we got the car it was torn apart And the outside box was stripped and repainted. So there is no evidence of the original. The new repro foam is very thin and light weight. And I can't see how it will do anything- Top

I agree. I suggest you look at closed cell foam strips used to insulate widows and doors. True you will need to fabricate your own gaskets using strips to fit the shape of the heater box. But once installed will be transparent of your handy work and it will seal. A lot of this foam has peel and stick adhesive.- Top

Re: mid year out side firewall AC box insulation
Keith, I have heard a lot about Doc Rebuild, he seems to make some quality foam sealing strips. Maybe Gene can comment. I think it maybe worth at least looking into.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top
