    Distributor Ignition Top Shield

Polishing up my assumed-to-be original distributor shield, I noticed 3 letters "PNC" stamped into the side of the shield, clearly visible when installed. This is on my late (August 1st) 1975 corvette. I do not see a mention of these letters in the TIM&JG. I would think they would be listed as an identifying feature. So either my shield is a) not original, b) original, but the letters are replicated on all reproductions, or c) original, and just no mention of this in the TIM&JG.

    Any input on these letters?

Just not mentioned in the TIM&JG. My original on my 73 also has it.

Maybe a possible correction for the 3rd edition? The TIM&JG mentions markings on the spark plug shields, I feel there may be a reasonable explanation for omitting the markings on the easily-accessible distributor shield.

10 points are given for originality on the ignition shielding, and this "PNC" may be the easiest tell-tale of an original distributor shield and of all the ignition shielding for that matter.

Peter, My 72 shield has the same stamping. I believe that its the original manufacturer.I don't believe the 70/72 manuel says anything about it either.

I surprisingly cannnot find anything on the manufacturer by googling - maybe my search criteria isn't the best. I would like to learn more about the manufacturer and their process.

In the meantime, I'm going to hunt down some aftermarket shields to see if they are replicating the "PNC" stamp.

My original '69 shield does not have this stamping, so somewhere between '69 and '72 the marking began, and I have seen it in straight form, as I've pictured above, and in a circular form as well.

            Peter,
As you know 1968 to early 1970 distributor shielding is a different configuration than L 1970>, You can look for that logo on the earlier shielding (actually several configurations as explained in the 1970-72 TIM&JG), but you will not find it. We judged 2 1971 and 2 1972 Corvettes at Bloomington Gold Saturday. All four cars had ignition shielding with the "PNC" logo (reminds me of a bank). Two of those cars were basically original and two were restorations. I will leave it to you to figure out what that means, but I would encourage you to go where the cars are for your research.

My 1970 LS5, my 1972LT1, my 1973 LS4 and my 1977 L48 all have the PNC on them. My 1977 only has 4,202 miles on it. I am sure that they are original!

Thanks for looking Terry. I will have my eyes peeled, starting at the National Convention. I would still like to learn the history behind this mysterious "PNC" manufacturer. Maybe they quit making chrome and got in the loans business?
