    Oil Pressure Related Issue?

Story: 5 years ago, I had the L68 rebuilt in my Fathers 67. He has not really used the car very much so I have taken upon myself to use the car and strech it out some. Anyways, since the rebuild (stock for the most part) the engine had a valve tick I had been chasing. After researching and concluding this may have anti pump up lifters, I had adjusted them to a half turn past zero lash. That took care of that issue.

The engine builder also installed a MONSTER oil pump in it (55 lbs at a hot idle with 5W30 Mobil 1) So with that being said, I have a couple questions.

    1. Can that much oil pressure contribute to what seems like a valve float issue? It will start missing if I spin it around 5K. At first, I thought I was chasing an ignition pick up but I have noticed this only occurs after I screw it on and will then take care of its self thus eliminating an overheating ignition part. It does not pop and fart, just goes flat and sounds lathargic.

    2. Can that much oil pressure push past the rings? It seems like this is smoking some out of both sides. (The engine was broke in on the dyno to seat the rings and break in the cam with just the outer valve springs)

While these questions may seem a little basic, I actually have most of my experience with mechanical camshafts. I am sure there are some details I have ommitted to solict good advice, so feel free to fire the questions.

    Thanks,

    Tim

    Tim,

With that kind of oil pressure the PCV may be breathing in oil as the amount of oil up in the rocker covers may be more than the breather baffle can handle.

I don't think the oil pressure will push past the rings but there may be excessive oil on the cylinder walls that the rings have to wipe so some may go past like that.

If the engine misses at 5000rpm, check the plug wires, dwell etc. first.

It was the pick up. It was a single wire conversion. Put a fresh set of points and condenser and BANG..........................were back in business again. Can buzz RPM to my hearts content!

This would be the second electroninc "conversion" that has sent me on a wild goose chase.
