    63 L84 PCV question

Looking to see if any of you have had a poor experience with aftermarket PCV valves.

Short story. Got my 63 on the road this year. It seems lean when tipping into the throttle and a little lathargic under full power. Been fooling with the lean and power stops (slight improvment). Took apart the injectors and cleaned them (another improvement). Timing is where I want it (38 total). Plugs look good (unleaded premium).

The thought crossed my mind about the PCV.

    Any thoughts?

    Beyond that, car runs good.

    Thanks,

    Tim

Tim, try pluging the pcv valve off. and drive it, this would be a easy test. If there is something wrong with the valve you'll know on a road test.

I recently had a friend that had a problem like yours, It ended up being the Distributer was in need of rebuilding.the Vacuum advance was not working correctly, along with the breaker plate was floating also. someone who rebuilds dist. and has a sun distributer machine to test and set up correctly.

i know that the factory vaccum advance is totaly incorrect for 63 SHP motors. The factory advance is working on 15" I believe. and the SHP motors are generally 10 to 13 vacuum at idle.

      Re: 63 L84 PCV question

Tim, A while back I asked a question on a method to test the PCV valves off the car. I don't know if I asked the question here or on VH's. Anyhow I didn't get any good answers.
I here people slamming the repro PCVs but
I have had pretty good luck with most of the repro PCV's. In fact better luck than using the service replacement sheet metal 590C. I have a mess of NOS ones and most of them aren't that great.
Meanwhile I doubt if your problem above is the PCV.
If your problem is with the FI unit it could be a long list of issues. John

        Tim -

As you may be aware, the '63 F.I. unit used a "ported" vacuum signal to the distributor vacuum advance (no vacuum advance at idle); this was a one-year "mistake", which Engineering corrected for '64 with a full manifold vacuum source to the distributor. You might give that a try.

I guess my first thought would be, did something change? Was it running OK before and a change occurred? I know mine came alive with full vacuum instead of ported and recurving the distributor to 64-65 specs. How are your point settings and condition. Are your plugs fresh and crisp? Fuel units are happy critters to drive and run most of the time. I try to run non ethanol when I can. It can be found on puregas.org. Good luck. Paul
          It's a good life!
