My rocker arm came off of #7 exhaust valve, not before destroying the end of the push rod. Parts dealer had several lengths to choose from, I settled on 7.794". What would have caused the Rocker to jump off the push rod and what length rod do I need for a 283cu 245HP stock engine? Loud popping sound through the carbuerator. Any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Stock length is 7.724". That can require a slight change if the block and deck surfaces are milled excessively. You can obtain an adjustable length pushrod to use to determine the exact length you require. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 57 Push Rod length
Your popping is caused because the exhaust isn't opening so when the intake opens it pops back thru the carb.Your valve got out of adjustment somehow to beat up the pushrod either the nut came lose or possible the stud is pulling out of the head or possible the cam lobe is gone. When you put it back together replace the nut ,check to see if the top of the stud is about even with the others then watch to see if the valve opens about the same as the others.- Top

Re: 57 Push Rod length
Ed,I had the same problem last fall with my 67 L79 motor, I was just driving down the highway at about 3000 rpm when one let loose. My push rod just bent and the rocker put a groove in the stud. After a lot or research I decide to replace one stud, all of the push rods and rockers, and no the stud did not backout. I assumed it happen due to metal fatigue in the push rod so I changed all of them. I used Comp cam Magnum pushrods and rockers which ran about $250 for the set, I've been very happy with the results. One other thing all of the parts fit under the stock valve covers.
