I bought a rebuilt correct voltage regulator for 65 327/365 no radio car. It does not function and I think the problem may be ground wires (I have a "new regulator" from NAPA that works Ok). The regulator has two ground wires, one to the alternator and one to horn relay. I tried to ground the regulator to the frame using another wire but that didn't help. Any ideas?

Re: 65 voltage regulator ground issues
John - If it was me, I'd contact the rebuilder and advise them of the situation and get their advice. If that doesn't solve the problem, then I'd return it and have them double check it. I trust they guarantee their work. Good luck, Pete- Top

Re: 65 voltage regulator ground issues
Pete, thanks for reply, I've already talked to the vendor and he thinks there is a ground problem. Just trying to see if anyone else has experienced a similar problem. If anyone knows the correct wiring for to a 65 alternator ( especially the grounding) I would appreciate any advice. Thx- Top

Re: 65 voltage regulator ground issues
The only separate ground wire in this circuit goes from the regulator to the horn relay. The alternator is grounded through the harness that branches off prior to the regulator. It also includes a large red wire and a two wire plug.Last edited by Jim D.; March 11, 2013, 11:46 PM.- Top

Re: 65 voltage regulator ground issues
Jim, Do I understand that the alternator ground through the harness attaches to the ground on the voltage regulator? I found the 65 assembly instruction manual and on page 214 it indicates that is how the ground is wired. But the separate ground wire from the regulator to the horn relay is not shown on the diagram. However, my car definitely has this separate wire. Using a new regulator from NAPA (I understand it has an internal ground), I can disconnect the wire from the regulator to the horn relay and the alternator still charges. I can't make the original regulator work with or without the ground wire between the regulator and the horn relay. So maybe the rebuilt original regulator is bad.- Top

I think it is time to return it to the rebuilder for a checkup!Bill Clupper #618- Top
