Rear trailing arm questions 1965 Corvette

In the judging manual it states that the spindle support (3820643N) is forged and painted black but as the part# states it is made of nodular iron which is a casting, also cast though not nodular iron is the caliper support bracket and the judging manual says that is also forgrd. SInce this is not the case should the brackets be cast iron in color which is what they are made of or should they be black and raw forged steel in color?

    Joe,
As far as I have been able to verify the spindle support casting was not black till '67. And was black before machining as the cut surfaces are bare. I cannot verify any finish of any kind on a '65 spindle support casting. This may not agree with the manual wording but........... Maybe someone has the GM drawings which spec the temper and finish.

      Some good discussion on this:

In the previous post, mentioned above, some opinions are representing the black as paint. Others opinion is the black is some type of dry film. The discussion, I think is exclusive of the early cars (63-64) chassis blackout paint applied. I think the judging manual is only an indicator of a black coloration. I feel (opinion only) that coloration is described as paint interchangeable with a dry film that also appears black. Keep in mind a rust preventative finish (non paint) has little lasting life out in the elements. Assembly of mating parts is on machined surfaces with, from my experience, has no "black". Thus indicating the "black" was applied prior to machining the castings.

The applied black is sequenced the same as the brake calipers in that the machining was done afterwards.

I can tell you this: the spindle support, caliper bracket and spindle flange are all CAST NODULAR or MALLEABLE IRON. None are forged. The half shaft flange is forged (unless you have a 1963 in which case it's cast nodular or malleable iron).

Well, it looks like we made an error (One of several) in the rush to get the first judging guides out quite a few years ago. Kinda supprised it's lasted this long. I'm sure a conversation with the current '65 team leader (and possibly '66-67 also) might lead to an upgrade in the next edition, especially if someone can help with a respectable description of what the proper appearance should be...
