Convertible bodies flex more than coupes due to the lack of the upper "cross brace" on the birdcage. So, the underdash braces were added to help compensate for this.
Sorry Joe. Apparently my attempt at cyber-humor missed its mark. I do know that these braces were to control flex. I was suggesting instead that the side impact protection in these cars is very poor. Other than the center frame cross member, there's really nothing to protect the occupant if/when struck broadside. I've always joked that I can double my side impact protection by keeping the side window DOWN. Anyone that's seen the door behind the interior panel should know what I mean.

Wasn't it 1973 when side impact bars were introduced to the Corvette?

Here's a side impact photo of a 1969 Corvette which was sent to me by Ralph Spears for posting to this thread.

That is Ralph's 1969 yellow/saddle 435. It was very new at that point.

BTW: I have seen some very late 1972s with the side beam in one door or another.

Boy, has this thread got off topic. I plead guilty. We would never find some of these comments if we wanted to.

In the picture, the larger convector is a stereo unit, the smaller one with the cut wires is a mono unit. Am I correct?

Not sure if this is accurate, but my understanding is the AM/FM Stereo unit uses both boxes and an AM/FM Mono unit would only use one box. Whether the Mono unit uses one of the boxes pictured or something completely different, I don't know.

                Re: 1970 AM/FM Radio/ Stereo

The 68-72 stereo radios used three assemblies - radio, stereo decoder (second channel amplifier is in it as is the relay to control the stereo indicator lamp) and a single transistor convector.

The 68-72 mono radios used two assemblies - radio and single transistor convector. The single transistor convector was identical in all cases.

The production date codes on the convectors on the radio and stereo decoder for a car were not always the same week or even year. Just an observation from seeing so many of them...

It won't help you much but it may some reading this post. Here is my March 68 car just before the production use of the braces. In fact my car and other early March cars were set up to have the braces, with the mounting hardware welded in, but no braces yet. Also you can see the 68 AM/FM stereo multiplex set up.

Dale, I don't remember if you participated in the survey we did while revising the manual, but your statement supports what we found. We did have braces reported on one car built Feb. 26 but none on a March 7 build. The JG states mid-March for the braces.

Here we have hi-jacked another thread--has nothing to do with a stereo radio.

                      Hi All,

No hard feelings with the hi-jacking thread. To be honest, I forgot about this thread until seeing it again tonight.

My car is in storage and I cannot open the passenger side door to look under the dash. Hopefully sometime soon I'll get around to moving it. Additionlly, the car does not run at the moment so I don't know if the radio works. This beauty is awaiting frame off. I'll post pics of the face of the radio this weekend.

                      Best,
                      Dave

See pics of my radio. As far as I could see the amps are still under the dash.

I have to differ a little with the statement that there is not much difference in sound between the Mono and Stereo radio. While yes they are both ancient in terms of technology, the Stereo actually has very nice fidelity and is quite a bit louder despite the lousy factory speakers. I had Jerry R rebuild mine and then replaced the speakers and was very very pleased with the sound. Frankly the Stereo separation is better than most new factory radios.

Obviously, the new stuff is far better but that old Stereo unit rebuilt by Jerry sounds pretty darn good. I was very pleasantly surprised
