    1968 quadrajet solder melted

Rebuilding my Quadrajet and found the solder holding the two bottom plugs melted and came loose. How do you replace the solder that holds in the plugs?

Brandon, I have never seen the lead plugs fall out before. I would think if you could find something that would let you melt some old lead tire weights and por it into the carb. bowl holes, it might work.I don't think that you'll want to heat the carb. bowl as it would damage it. you'll want something made of cast iron with a handle. use a propane torch to melt the lead. I would not try anything else as the gasoline will eat through it in short order.

      Edward and Brandon------

These plugs may have APPEARED like lead but I don't think they were. In any event, I know of no way to install the plugs as-original.

Most carb rebuilders repair this by completely removing the existing plugs, thoroughly cleaning the orifice and using an epoxy like JB Weld to fill and seal the orifice. JB Weld is impervious to gasoline and will result in a permanent repair. The original plugs, even if apparently intact, will often leak. The JB Weld, if installed properly, will not.

Joe, Is there a heated cross over. I think Brandon's is a big block? That might cerate a problem if so.

There's virtually always a heated cross-over (except 57-65 FI). However, the JB Weld repair has been used for years on Q-Jets (in fact, it's the only sort of repair for this problem that I'm aware of) and I don't know of any failures as a result of heat from the cross-over. Even if the "heat slot" is intact (which I do not recommend), it has no bearing on this repair.

I have some high temperature JB Weld. I plan on trying it. Thanks for the help.
