    '96 LT4 Alternator

The alternator part number for the LT4 is not listed in the table on pg 152 of the 94-96 TIM&JG. Attached is picture of the part number of the unit currently in my car. It's a bit hard to read but appears to be:

    1st line: 10480139 140A
    2nd line: N223 12V NEG

This car does have RPO KG9 - 140A Generator but this part number does not appear in any catalog I can find. Also, I don't see any number sequence that looks like a date code as described in the TIM&JG.

This is a high milage car (98k) so a replacement generator is not out of the question. Is this likely the orginal or replacement generator?

Floyd, this prolly doesn't help but my original owner 9K mile LT4 alternator has no markings. At all.

I believe this is the correct original alternator part number for your application, but I am not 100% sure. If you have a Factory Service Manual, it may have the original alternator part number (possibly in section 6D3 or in the "alternator specifications" section). If you don't have this manual, you should have it.

Unfortunately - no dice. The problem I have is the service manual sends me to 02.275 of the parts catalog. In the copy of the parts catalog I have, the Generator Usage Charts end at 1991. I have not been able to find this part number but I would be surprised to find it's not the original. All of the other major components are original and the mechanicals are in great shape for a 98k mile car and the generator shows some age. However, on the other hand, all of service parts - belts, hoses, etc that have been replaced with genuine GM service parts so if the alternator had been replaced at some point it would have been replaced with the correct GM service part.

        Thanx

GM never offered a new alternator for 1996 LT4. Officially, the only alternator offered in SERVICE was remanufactured. That's not to say that if you obtained one it would actually be remanufactured. At least early on, it would almost certainly have been new but, it was "officially" remanufactured (that means a core charge is assessed). In any event, the part number was the part number for a remanufactured unit and would not have been the same as the part number actually found on the alternator regardless of whether the unit was new or remanufactured.

By the way, I believe that all LT4 were automatically equipped with KG9. For LT1 it was optional. However, believe it or not, the 140 amp alternator supplied with LT1 with KG9 was different than the 140 amp alternator supplied with LT4. I do not know what the difference was, though.
