1979 Aux. Electric Fan Switch, 2 wire - where to find one

UPDATED: Standard Motor Products (SMP) p/n TS-240 is a close substitute.

It closes at 235 deg. (factory is 238) and opens at 225 degrees (factory is 201).

2 terminal switch, the SMP wiring harness is S-651.

GM p/n was 3050223 and used on a variety of GM products in the mid-80's (Buick, Chevy, Olds, etc)

Switch is sold both by NAPA and Federated. According to SMP, this switch is still being made, but NAPA showed it as unavailable. Federated Auto Stores showed them in stock. NAPA can cross reference the SMP to their own p/n FS 123

Summit Racing lists them as a special order. AC Delco cross reference is p/n 15-4255 which is mostly out of stock too.

Wiring this will require new ends, I doubt the Corvette molded plug will plug into this switch.

    ORIGINAL POST

Hopefully someone here can point me in a direction.

1979 L82 Aux. Electric fan switch, this is the 2 wire switch that screws into the RH block by
    cyl. 6 & 8.

Left a message with DeWitts, looked at Lectric Limited, Paragon, AC Delco, Standard Motor Products, Zip,
    DocRebuild.

Pretty sure this was a 1979-80 only switch.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bob

I can't figure out where you're coming up with this application for the GM #3050223. There was a switch of GM #3050223, aka Delco 15-4255. It was recently discontinued but there should still be some around. However, I can't find where this switch was ever cataloged for a Corvette application.

I show the switch used for the auxiliary cooling fan for 1979 Corvette with L-82 was originally GM #8993358. That switch was discontinued in June, 1984 and replaced by GM #25036595. The latter was recently discontinued without supercession but, once again, it should not be too difficult to find at this point.

Re: 1979 Aux. Electric Fan Switch, 2 wire - where to find one

      Thanks Joe,

I had the p/n's (8993358, 25036595, 15-4255). My AC Delco vendor, GM dealer, etc. searched and we couldn't locate one.

I did find some online, but when I tried to order them they were not in stock and, needless to say discontinued.

My alternative was to try and find something else. (I'm also not a fan of eBay since who knows what you might get).

I looked through the NAPA "TEMP" catalog (HVAC) and looked at all the 2 terminal switched under the radiator cooling fan section.

Most are not available (e.g. SMP version of the 15-4255, 25036595, etc.).

I ran across the Buick/Chevy/Olds/Pontiac application switch (3050223) that was also showing "no longer available", but tracked one down in a warehouse.

Overall, it's not ideal but the only switch I could find. I did speak to SMP to see if they could help cross reference the specs of the original switch to something current, but they said they couldn't find anything.

Delco 15-4255 is not the same as GM #8993358 or GM #25036595. 15-4255 is the same as GM #3050223. As I mentioned and as you apparently know, the latter is not a part originally used for the 79-80 Corvette application. Among other differences, the connector on the 3050223/15-4255 is completely different than that used on the 8993358 or 25036595.

I'm a bit surprised that the 25036595 is so hard to come by as it was only fairly recently discontinued.

Re: 1979 Aux. Electric Fan Switch, 2 wire - where to find one

I know the switches are different, turns out the one I went to pickup today was a used switch anyways.......

And yes, the AC Delco / GM 25036595 seems to be very hard to come by. Ecklers shows it as a single terminal switch
for the C4 ZR-1's. Nobody else I've found has one. I did find it in a few catalogs, but they show it as unavailable.

Painless Wiring offers generic switches that are 2 terminal (e.g 30110 & 30111), but they go off alot colder than the factory switches. Needless to say, I have no idea what kind of temperatures the block location sees. I don't want the
fan running all the time - so I may have to experiment a bit.

Thanks for your help with this.

GMPartsdirect.com shows to have this part # in stock. Would be worth a call

              Thanks Dick.

I just tried to order it, it was a "special order" and no doubt coming from the guy on Amazon that wants $400
              for the switch.

Through GM PartsDirect, grand total was $412 bucks..........so.......don't want it that bad !

I'm trying to track down GMParts Direct phone number to verify the cost.......could be a computer snafu too

This kind of thing occurs on GM Parts Direct when a part is discontinued and unavailable. In that case, their "program" figures the shipping at the cost of an engine assembly shipping. Why, I have no idea but it sure discourages anyone from ordering it.

you can say that again - especially with no phone number to call to figure out it out.

Switch was $9, they wanted $12 to ship it. When you go to check out, the shipping charge of the part was jacked
                  up.

Luckily I cancelled it in time.

Thanks for your help. Right now, I'm taping off the harness connector at the engine block !
