    Oil Filter, '67 L71

I was in a hurry, and picked up an STP brand oil filter for my '67 L71. But when I opened it, it is a cheap paper/cardboard looking thing not at all like the NAPA Gold/Wix filter I usually get to put in the can. I am assuming I should make the long trip to NAPA to get the usual filter, since this one is obviously not good to put in, correct?

What you have sounds like the currently available AC Delco PF-141.

Well, I'm pretty confident that the filter is adequate. Would I be comfortable using it? No. As far as I know, STP does not manufacture oil filters. So, what you found in the box was likely manufactured by Purolator, Fram, or Champion Labs, outfits that do manufacture oil filters and box under various other brands, as well as their own. By the way, if you were to buy an AC Delco PF-141 I think you will get essentially the same piece you got in the STP box.

The Wix 51143 is, in my opinion, the best currently available filter for your application.

Thanks to all, and BTW FYI, the NAPA Gold filter part number is 1143, it is a Wix obviously. The difference between the NAPA/Wix and the AC/Fram cardboard type is so striking, you wonder why anyone uses the AC.

I thought I did, but since it has been a year or so, wanted to make sure by asking the experts that some incredible improvements in cardboard technology was not made by STP I had not heard of, guess not.......
