Too part question . I have heard stories about new or repro. side exhaust not sounding correct . I have started the restoration on my Rough 31.000 mile BB with side exhaust . My orig. pipes still have good chrome , the stainless part is very good and the header pipe is solid but rusty . I also have a new set I bought from G.M. in the 80,s Will they sound the same ? 2nd question I am thinking about taking my side pipes to redi strip along with my frame . Has anyone done that ? My concern is the baffling inside the pipe .

Your original sidepipes and the GM ones you purchased in the 1980's SHOULD sound the same......but your originals may be louder or more raspy due to age and wear.
I WOULD NOT bring the originals to Redi-Strip, but would clean/refurbish by hand.
I do not believe that GM sidepipes contained stainless steel. There is a carbon steel header section, aluminized steel chambered section, and chrome tips. That's all I know of.
Both sets of GM pipes should have a "W" stamp, and GM part numbers on the pipes.

Re: 65 side exhaust
I just bead blasterd my side pipes. This did not eliminate the rough area on the header pipes close to the exhaust manifolds, but did provide a clean surface for me to refinished. Mine is a driver and my finish will not get past NCRS judging, but it pleases the car show type of people.- Top
