Installed the engine for the first time in my 58 project with dual quad clones. The hood will not close completely with the air cleaner installed or without the air cleaner but the retaining studs for the air cleaner in each carburetor remaining. I know the base on the clones is about 1/4" thicker than the originals, but I have a greater hood gap than that; I don't think that is the issue. The hood will close completely and properly without the air cleaner and the studs removed. As I brainstorm for ideas, I wonder if for some reason the engine is sitting a tad higher than it should for some reason. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: C1 Hood Clearance Problem with Dual Quads
I believe I may have found the answer. The original motor mount cushions were replaced. The original cushions are 3 to 3 1/4 cm in height (bottom plate to top plate on cushion), whereas the replacements are 4 cm in height (on driver side). Could someone let me know what their size is?Last edited by Richard H.; January 20, 2013, 05:38 PM.- Top

Re: C1 Hood Clearance Problem with Dual Quads
i had a similar problem trimmed the air cleaner studs and adjusted the "hood adjuster screws" and solved the problem. I used some modeling clay which I formed into a 2 inch little mound, removed the studs and closed the hood. This showed me how much clearance I needed to gain. Hope this helps- Top

Re: C1 Hood Clearance Problem with Dual Quads
Thanks for your suggestions. In my case, mounting the air cleaner without the studs still creates a problem. Using the height of the stud, I determined that If I lower the front of the engine 1 cm (approx 5/8") the hood will close properly. This should also provide the needed clearance for the top shroud and fan, which does not fit now. So, I am focused on replacing the current engine mount cushions, which measure approx 4cm in height, with cushions for the C1 that measure approx 3cm. I hope that will be sufficient to resolve both clearance problems. I am reluctant to tamper with the "hood adjuster screws" as the hood fit is perfect without this problem. Another option, I believe, is to elongate the mounting bracket holes so that the bracket sits lower.- Top

I think you have other problems. One cm is .4 inches. If your original mounts were 3 and 1/4cm you will be only gaining .3 inches with the new cushions. Keep in mind under hard throttle the engine will raise slightly. I could be wrong but I think you need more clearance than that. I've checked my 62 and I have 3/4 inch clearance. Hopefully someone will do the modeling clay thing on their car and tell you how much clearance there should be.
