The car was assembled in late August, 1955

The engine block casting is correct for your application

The engine block casting date is August 2, 1955

The engine block stamp pad stamping "0370863" is a sequence number. In other words, this engine was the 370,863rd engine manufactured at the particular engine assembly plant. The "F55FG" identifies it as assembled at Flint, MI engine plant for the 1955 model year as a 180HP 265 installed in a Corvette with Powerglide.

The intake casting number is correct for a 1955 Corvette

The intake casting date is July 15, 1955.

The carburetor is correct for a 1955 Corvette and is dated July, 1955

So, it looks like all the numbers and dates "line up" for the car.

I guess something could have happened to the Block and they got a new one at some point. I brought this at an auction 15 years ago. They have these numbers on the flyer. They said matching numbers. I guess they were wrong. I am just looking to fix some things on the car.

I don't think the F55FG stamp refers to May 5. It simply refers to the 1955 model year. The engine seems to be completely consistent with an original engine for this car.

Yes, that's correct; I mis-advised. For 1955 engines, the "55" does relate to just the model year. So, all dates "line up".

I'll correct my previous post so that it doesn't send someone off on the wrong track if they do an archive search in the future.

joe, you used the word "manufactured". is this another way of saying this was the 370863 engine assembled at the plant? if this engine went according to the passenger car records a f55f block with a august 2 casting date would have a 034----- pad number. 037---- pad numbers appear closer to august 25. unless robert's casting number is around august 25 it means that this block was "manufactured" about 3 weeks later than the august 2 castings used for passenger cars. (fg: 195HP with powerglide)

Yes, I used the term "manufactured" basically synonymous with "assembled". However, my understanding of the "sequence" number system in use at that time may be "flawed". There are many gaps in my knowledge of C1 issues, especially really early C1.
