    72 distributor identification tag

On a 72 distributor tag should you see the red or the natural aluminum with the id? Thanks for any info.

Rick I believe the Red is out. I think that if the aluminum is out you would be able to read. the part no. and date.

So if my car was built in May should the red be showing and not the aluminum?

Rick when installed on car the numbers and letters will be face out. If installed wrong you may not be able to read when judging.

I think that his question has to do with which side of the red/silver aluminum band is visible when the numbers are readable. The machine could be fed with either side of the metal out when being stamped. I've found the general consensus in the 70-72 years to be red more often. In 62 it was silver almost exclusively. I'd have a real issue with a judge deducting for color on those. However, he could note differences between original font/spacing and reproduction, and if that were the case, I'd have to defer to his judgement.
bottom line answer-nobody we know watched you're specific dist being built. I'd go with the consensus, and have red if I were getting a repro and had a choice.

Many of us have seen the tag ether way silver/red as Mike pointed out the spacing is important and red being the seen more often. What Ed is saying the raised number/letters stamping should be pointing out that is the indicator to observe the color is secondary.

                Rick,

Here's the 1H2 dated tag from my F20 build date 1972. Readable from the silver side.
