Cannot seem to correct noise from tach, 72 Sting Ray convertible, 350 4 sp. Tach always was noisey, however, just put in new cable since tach stopped working. Now sounds like noisey lifter, it isn't lifter. When we move cable under hood, noise goes away. Any advice?

Re: Tachometer noise
That noise is the sound of the distributor tach drive eating itself.
Unscrew the tach drive gear from the side of the distributor and check the gear teeth for damage. Also check the nylon thrust button at the back end of the tach gear well. If that button needs replaced I am not sure where you can get a new one, but they used to be available from Chevrolet -- but then a lot of things used to be available from Chevrolet. If you are lucky the gears will be intact and you can lube the gear well -- both the part that meshes with the distributor shaft and where the side gear mates with its housing. If that reduces or eliminates the noise, be happy. Sometimes one has to shim the distributor drive shaft to eliminate the excess play that in in the distributor drive shaft in order to eliminate the noise. Don't delay checking this out because if there is any damage to the distributor main shaft or the tach drive gear both will have to be replaced.
Good advice at this site for all distributors, not just breaker-less ignition:
