67 SB PS Steering pulley color

Would the pulley be a natural finish or a black finish on the 67 327-300 power steering pump. I was not able to find any evidence of paint on mine.

Al, its possible that your pulley was black phosphate. alot of the pulleys of the C2/C/3 era were like that. and through the years they get painted semi gloss black.

Your application should use a stamped steel, "pancake" style pulley of GM #3770509. All of these that I have ever studied were painted semi-gloss black. However, as Edward noted, it's possible that some early, original pullies were black phosphate.

If your pulley has absolutely no evidence of any paint anywhere on it, I would not rule out the possibility that it was originally unfinished. Was it rusted all over? I have seen examples of another part numbered "pancake" style pulley that was originally unfinished.

Joe, no rust is visible anywhere on it, only a lot of grease. Serial # 11588 The pulley appears to have a light grayish appearance to it, but didn't resemble a phosphate finish unless thru the years, it faded to that. Should I just paint it semi-gloss black and be done with it? Please take a look at my post on the 300Hp balancer just posted

Some good photos of the pulley, front and rear, might help us in evaluating its finish.

Joe, I'm sorry as I don't have the means to post pictures, meaning the proper equipment.

Just to confirm, is your pulley the stamped steel, "pancake" style 3770509?

By the way, posting photos is easy. All you need is a digital camera. Even a real cheap and simple one will do just fine for this purpose. In fact, a simple one will make it even easier for a novice. Photos are extremely valuable on this board. As the old saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words". Actually, they're worth a lot more than a thousand words, especially on a discussion board like this. Very often, we're discussing configurational issues here and sometimes very subtle such issues. It's often virtually impossible to describe such things but a photos will often accomplish it virtually perfectly!

Joe, the pulley is stamped steel. I've got a digital camera but don't have a cable to connect it to the computer or the know-how. I'm still old-school, as I don't text face book or all that other stuff. I hold to the theory that a phone was made to talk on. I'm not trying to be smart--- about it or anything, so please don't take it that way. I guess with my work schedule & being on the road so much, I don't have time to learn or do these things-you know-can't teach an old dog new tricks-Ha Ha. But anyway it is a stamped steel pulley, that was covered with a lot of grease and oil. Al

All you probably need is a patch cable with a mini-USB on one end and a regular USB on the other end. As a good alternative, you can just get an SD card reader and connecting USB cable. The whole thing won't cost more than about 10 bucks. Hook up the USB cable to the computer, connect the card reader to the other end of the cable, and insert the SD card from your camera into the card reader. It took me about 5 minutes to learn the whole process to post photos.

By the way, I don't use a cellular phone for anything but voice, either. But, I do accommodate technology enough to post photos. Like I say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

guys - this is what will be coming out in the new Judging Guide.

NOTE: this is a general description of the finish except for the 427 crankshaft, 327 L79 cast iron and alternator pulleys.
