67 Front Calipers - Are Springs needed?

I was replacing the front (leaking) seals. Purchases seal kit and pads from VBP. When I opened the caliper there were no springs under the pistons. The last time I had my breaks serviced done was about 20 years ago. Front caliper were replaced. So I have been driving (about 30 - 40K miles) with no springs on my right front caliper.

What is the purpose for the Springs?
    Are Springs needed ?

    Thanks

    Ron

The springs keep a little contact of the pad so the heat generated will dry the rotors in wet conditions. They also keep the piston extended so the pedal will be full when first applied. Other than that, they are not needed. If there is no run out, the pedal will probably stay up, and if you don't drive it in wet conditions normally that should not be a problem.
