    1985 interior

How does one separate the back of the seat from the seat back?

Jim, hope this makes sense. Don't remember on how the bottom attaches but think once the top is loose you can figure it out. I ground a round approx 1/8" notch in a long flat tip screw driver. Then, at the top, push in on the two wire rods which run vertically and are hooked under a clip on each side of the seat back top. Think you have push the rods in and then slightly lift to clear the clips edge. If this doesn't help let me know. Just don't ruin things because it does come off once you have the skill?

Just wanted to further confuse you but the clips are about 3-4" down from the top of the plastic. The rods are actually molded into part of the upper seat foam. If you can get one side loose the other becomes easier to dislodge. Been couple of years since I did mine but the bottom is a similiar arrangement except (I know the lower rod runs horizontally) and attaches to two lower clips. Once the top is loose, you either push down on the plastic or pull up and the bottom comes loose. As I recall, that is all that holds the back on. Good Luck!

Jim, I feel bad that my recall memory is not what it once was. I went to bed and dreamed about your problem and my advice--I forgot the most painful part--woke up and immediately came back to the board! The seat upper side covers are also hog ringed and if the rings are not cut you cannot totally separate the back once the rods/clips have been separated. If you separate the center cover from the sides and look in joint area "some rings attach only the side covers" and "some rings attach only the center cover". So, side covers rings have to be cut, upper rods pushed in to release from clips, and bottom clips separated. Don't dig a hole!!!!!!!!! I did mine and they ended up looking great even if it sounds like I don't know what I doing. UGH!!

Bill thanks for your posts. After viewing Corvette America's how to install seat covers, I no longer want to remove the back cover. The side piece I wanted to remove to repair is hog ringed to the center piece. Interesting video from Corvette America.
