The rear axle on the 1960 corvette has the following cast # gb208 and below it # 3725899. I have looked up the info in corvette by the numbers book and page 437, the cast # 3725899 is located...what does the gb208 mean?

Re: 1960 rear axle identification
Tom,
Driver's side cast number would be the part # 3725899, which is the standard rear end part number. The other four (4) should be digits representing the month and day such as 01 29; 01 for Jan and 29 for 29th day.
Passenger side stamped in is the gear ratio (2 alpha characters) and the assembly date.

Re: 1960 rear axle identification
B208 is the casting date, February 20, 1958, and the "AM" ratio code identifies it as being a 3.36, originally installed in a 1958 passenger car with Powerglide. The "AM" ratio code wasn't used in Corvettes, but the axle center section was shared with '55-'64 passenger cars, and many were swapped. If what appears to be "AM" is really "AN", it could be a Corvette 3.70 center section, used with manual transmissions.- Top
