The oil dipstick tube on the '61 broke flush with the block after finishing up some other repairs. Is there a fairly simple and painless way to fix this? Can an undersized tube be purchased? Will oil come out of the block tube if I start or drive the car? Attached is a photo of the break.

Re: Oil Fill Tube Broke Flush With Block Needs Repair
removal of oil pan and driving the tube out from below is the best fix. perhaps you could fasten a slide hammer , threaded on the end , into the broken tube, then try removal. good luck,mike

Larry------
No "undersize" tubes are available (even if they were they would not work with a standard dipstick).
Two ways to remove the stub:
1) Just as Mike advises, or;
2) obtain a short length of steel pipe that is just larger ID than the oil tube orifice in the block and about 1-1/4" long. Obtain a self-tapping screw or lag bolt that is of a size that will cut threads into the oil tube stub ID and about 2-1/4" long. Place a washer or two on the screw, place the pipe section over and surrounding the stub, and thread the screw down into the stub. Kepp turning the screw until the screw pulls the stub out of the block and into the pipe section. Done!
By the way, if you use a screw driver placed on the collar of the new tube to drive the new tube into the block orifice and thereby "squashing" and "flattening" the collar, the new tube will soon break off just like the old one.

I also put some wheel bearing grease in the tube to keep filing from going into the oil pan.
