6.70 15 Spare on Steel Wheel - Any idea what this fits?
6.70 15 Spare on Steel Wheel - Any idea what this fits?
I am kind of stumped about what this spare fits. It has a non DOT firestone spare on it but doesn't appear to be a Corvette wheel. Does anyone have an idea what it came off of? I was going to use it as a spare for a 63. The back also has 029PH409 molded into it. Thanks! IMG_1417.JPGIMG_1418.JPG

Those #s are molded into the back of the tire. I am trying to figure out what is the correct application for the rim and also whether that tire is a correct tire for a corvette that came with a 6.70-15. I initilally thought it was, but I also read that dates weren't stamped in tires until 68 or 69. If that # molded into the tire is a date code, then the tire was made after any corvette that would've used it as original equipment.

As far as I know the codes on the tires from the 60's were internal to the company that made the tire. As of yet I have not found an date or anyone that can decipher the tire codes.
Saying that, if its a 6.70-15 and the WW is the proper width it should judge just fine on a Corvette.
If the rims does not have the bumps by the valve stem, it's not for a 63 Corvette.

OK, verify that a "GM" appears on one of the raised areas between the lug nut holes and none of those areas has a small hole (1/8" ?) A 66 (65?) steel wheel will no longer have the nubs. There are a couple of other items also, but the wheel experts will need to cover that.
Or just dismount the tire and read the date code.

I believe it is a firestone deluxe champion, I don't have a photo of the sidewall handy that show it so I'll have to double check. I have more pictures attached here.IMG_1420.JPGIMG_1427.JPGIMG_1425.JPG

Since the wheel does not have the "bumps" for the small hub caps and no stampings near the valve it is probably a 65-66 Corvette wheel (GM # 3869156, 15 X 5 1/2 JK). You can measure the gross wheel width using 2 straight narrow boards about 16" long and measuring through the hub hole. A gross wheel width of 6 1/2" would mean the wheel width is 5 1/2". The hub hole diameter should be 2.783" (about 2 25/32"). You will have to take the tire off to see the stamped size, date code and Kelsey-Hayes logo.
