I would like to continue to attend Regional and National events, but to retire my '67 from flight judging and instead drive to them in my new 2012. I have the Reference Manual, and have read about Sportsman, I assume I could attend the meets and register a new Corvette in that class for display at the meets?

Re: Sportsman Award questions
Michael,
You may wish to check with the event chairperson before you send in your money. I entered my '65 in a regional a couple of years ago with the intent of display in "Sportman" Class. To my dismay there was not a provision to diplay "Sportman" entry just parking with all the DD's and spectators - sorry but I'm not about to go off and leave my 2nd love of 40+ years on a parking lot with the general public for a green ribbon.
Not knocking the award - and you may not care where you have to park your '67 - but if you do you may see what the event has planned for any cars in the Sportman's class.- Top

Re: Sportsman Award questions
Thanks for the insights Carl. I am going to retire my '67 from any long NCRS trips, so I was going to take my 2012 ZR1. And the one I first looked at, the Texas Regional in October, has a separate Sportsman class indoors so I think I should be OK.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: Sportsman Award questions
The Sportsman Award, in regard to cars driven to a NCRS meet, is broken up into two categories according to page 39 of the NCRS Corvette Judging Reference Manual: "1953-current production" and "stock appearing 1953-1982 Corvette...". Only the second of the two categories is eligible for display "...on the judging field with the judged cars during the event judging as [s]pace permits".
I attended the 2011 Texas Regional with my '65 Sting Ray as a Sportsman entry. I was sort of excited thinking that my car would be on display, inside. I was very disappointed when I was directed to the underground parking garage. Yes, it was "indoors" but well away from the show floor. There seemed to be quite a few Sting Rays parked in this underground garage. I know that some of them were there for Performance Verification (PV) judging but some of them were Sportsman Award entries because this was stated on the car's placard. Only a handful of people were down there in the garage, apparently performing a PV on a car.
There was no displaying of my car of any kind, just tight parking spaces. As soon as I went upstairs and signed in for the event, they handed me my green rosette. So, don't get all excited about displaying your car at the 2012 Texas Regional. It's not gonna happen unless they have changed this part from last year's event. I just don't want you to drive your ZR-1 there and have the same disappointment.

Re: Sportsman Award questions
Thanks for your experienced insights Clark. I guess after all the Flight Judging hoopla over the years, and sort of noticing the Sportsman group tucked away in out-of-the-way places, I am not expecting any great display opportunities and know Sportsman is not much of an award. I was just wanting to go to the regional, participate in the many judging education opportunities, enjoy the camaraderie of the folks, and be able to have my 'Vette there too, after I enjoy a long drive in such a dream car. And remember, the new ones are "ZR1", not the old school "ZR-1"
BTW: I found the Sportsman plaque (see the JRM for requirements for it) to be a nice item for my personal display, and the way it is presented is especially nice.Terry- Top

Re: Sportsman Award questions
Guy's, understand that this award was created for more then one purpose. First, it is a way to bring Corvettes that wouldn't necessarily be in attendance, due to modifications/age/personal preference, and or to new for judging, etc. Secondly, it is a way for our chapters to generate a little income. Of course the plaque.
Please note that your award we be sent to the last chapter you joined! So, if you belong to more then one chapter you might want to make certain it goes to the chapter of your choice. The computer lists this way and Roy certainly can't keep up with every members current address.
I really enjoyed earning this award and proud to have one hanging on the wall. The trips were sometimes quite eventful to say the least! The best (or should I say worst) was driving from PA to Concord NC, my fuel pump went bad about thirty miles away from the site. Luckily, I had another good friend following me, and was able to limp along, doing no more then 40 MPH on the highway the rest of the way. Found a replacement at A d v a n c e A u t o (slow southern draw [P.O.]LOL) and changed it out right in the infield!
As far as where to park, you're with a crowd of people that know how to respect them. Never had a worry.
Every chapter will have their own way of presenting the award. I have seen the awards being announced and handed out at chapter meetings, mine was simply handed to me at the end of a small chapter meet.
If not for striving to earn this award I would never have drivin to so many meets.- Top

Re: Sportsman Award questions
Well next weekend I'll hit my 20 points for the Sportsman Award and I'll have to say its been fun as I have driven my 67 over 6000 miles the last two years to earn this award and I meet a lot of new friends along the way. Now its time to clean her up for its first and only Flight Judging event which I hope will happen in October.
Remember its all about driving and enjoying these cars, and you only go around once in life.

Re: Sportsman Award questions
Mike - We have additional space in the Frisco convention center for the Texas Regional this year so our plan is to be able to include Sportsman Display and PV cars indoors. Both classes should be placed on the show floor near the door. PV cars will need the ability to exit for the 10 mile road trip. Sportsman Display cars will be allowed to exit at the end of each day ONLY AFTER judging is finished and OK'd by the Event Judging Chairman.
I understand people's disappointment with their cars placed anywhere other than on the show floor....mine was one of them. We are doing our best to correct that so everyone can enjoy the Sportsman and PV cars as well.

That's great, thanks Tim, looking forward to being there. I know the problems with arranging all these things for indoor spaces and appreciate your efforts. Cheers, see you soon.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: Sportsman Award questions
Tim,
Might be best to clarify - will the inside Sportsman cars be able to come and go or once inside they have to stay inside?

Re: Sportsman Award questions
Michael,
Meant there needs to be more specifics. Such as; 1) Specify exit time 5Pm providing Judging for the day is completed, 2) Convention center is secured from all entrance/exit at 8PM. Sportsman not in by 8PM will not be allowed in the Convention center until 7AM the following morning.

Re: Sportsman Award questions
Gary is right, there are many more specifics necessary to be compliant with the NCRS guidelines and for the movement of cars to be supervised and safe. The timeframes need to be worked out but there will be a single, short window early in the morning and and another short one sometime after judging is finished AND general admission closes that cars will be allowed to enter (morning) and exit (evening). This is not (repeat, NOT) an enter and exit as you please privilege. It is also NOT an opportunity for cars on the judging field to be removed.
Gary can speak from experience on this next point and this is the reason most events don't even bring Sportsman Display cars indoors. Someone always shows up and wants to remove their car on their own schedule. Sometimes they have a good reason, most of the time it's for their own convenience. It usually ends up in an unpleasant scene and an unhappy member. We've even caught people trying to get the door open so they can just help themselves.
Assuming the event organizers agree to provide an option to place Sportsman Display cars indoors, the rules and timeframes will be available to all the entries. For those that need more flexibility, there will be an alternate display area designated (probably in the parking garage like last year). If you place your car on the show floor, please don't ask for special treatment!- Top
