    1967 427 435 hp Engine Assembly Stamping

    I own a late May built 1967 427 435hp California delivered car which I purchased from the original owner. I have known this car since 1972 and there is no doubt in my mind it has the original engine. It has not run since parked in 1971. The pad is stamped is stamped TI0I19JA. I have the original build sheet for this car which also has the engine number listed the same as the stamping. The pad reflects the correct VIN. Can anyone interpret the stamping for me? Thanks in advance.

    You've got one digit too many between the 'T' and the 'JA', there should be only four characters.

      Re: 1967 427 435 hp Engine Assembly Stamping

      Is the extra "1" a typing error? Should it be "TI0I9JA"?

      "T" = Tonowanda, NY
      "I0" = October
      "I9" = 19th of the month
      "JA" = 427 eng. A.I.R. Special High performance and Tri. Carb.

      The October 19, 1966, engine seems quite early for a late May 1967 car but it is possible. The big difference in dates in more common with the big block engines.

      Has a NCRS judge told you that your engine does not meet the ridiculous "6 month rule"? Your documentation seems to indicate that it's an original engine.

        Re: 1967 427 435 hp Engine Assembly Stamping

        David and Michael thank you for your responses. I looked at the build sheet again and it reflects as David says, T1019JA. Interestingly, the build sheet uses the number "1" where if I remember correctly, the stamping uses the capital letter "I". This weekend I will re-examine the pad and post my finding. I agree, an October built engine for a May car seems early. Thanks again.

          My guess is TI0I19JA should have been T0119JA for Thursday, January 19, 1967. That is better than October, but still off from my pad library. I have pad photos for vin #15144, a late March car with T0315JE. VIN #17924 has T0425JE. Now the fact that the car is a ''JA'' Smog engine might have something to do with the date descripancy. They had a lost engine that had to go somewhere.

            What is the block casting date and some of the other date codes on other engine parts. As James suggested the stamp on the pad may be mis-stamped. Maybe it should have been "01" for January instead of "10" for October.

            I assume that the number ones on the stamping are like the letter "I" which is normal for Chevrolet.

              Rick -

              When you say "build sheet", exactly what document is that - is it Copy 7 of the "Corvette Order", the Protect-O-Plate, or ??

                Hi John,

                Yes it is Copy 7. I have the car stored across town and tomorrow will try to get over and check the block casting date and post. Unfortunately the 391 heads were changed prior to the car being parked and are dated around 1968 but are still 391. Any other dates I should be looking for? I do have the Protect-O-Plate. Interestingly the Copy 7 shows a date received as 04-17-67 with an Exp. Date of Prod. as 04-19-67. However the block which shows the carburetor code, engine number, etc shows the date produced as 5-25-67.

                Thanks John, Jim, Michael and David. I appreciate your comments.

                  Rick,

                  Date codes are on distributor, carbs, alternator, fuel pump, water pump, intake, radiator, supply tank, fan-clutch, and regulator. Don't take anything apart, just look and take notes.

                      block: "J 12 6" (Oct. 12, 1966)
                      carbs: "713" (1967, Jan. 3rd week)
                      "721" (1967, Feb. 1st week)
                      "743" (1967, Apr. 3rd week)
                      starter: "7 A 8" (1967, Jan. 8th)
                      dist.: "6 J 12" (1966, Sept. 12th)
                      smog: "6 J 12" (1966, Sept. 12th)
                      alt: "7 E 11" (1967, May 11th)

                      The letter "I" is usually omitted in stamped date codes (M = Dec.)
                      Casting dates include the letter "I" (L = Dec.)

                      What's the problem? They did not make many of these engines in 1967. As far as I know all the components (identified by part numbers) that you listed are correct.

                      Your engine was assembled Oct. 19, 1966 in Tonowanda and apparently sat around for awhile with other 427's until you car was built in May 1967 and all the other components were installed on the engine.
