Surge Tank and Hoses

I am trying to resolve some differences that have appeared concerning the UPPER and LOWER Hoses that are attached to the Black Surge Tank.

I have seen 94's with white lettering and a 95 and 96 with yellow lettering of the words UPPER and LOWER. Also further down the hoses is the lettering of 0918 89 CIP.

1. Would like responses on what color and type of lettering you have found on your or a friends 94-96 Corvette.

2. There are additional markings on the hoses, one being 0918 89 CIP on side and a date code (12 20 93 for a 1994) on the other side.
Any comments on these markings would be appreciated.

3. On the Black Surge Tank itself in the center on a flat surface is a date stamp (1364-May 16, 1994). This precedes my build date of August 4, 1994 by about 10 weeks. Also any comments would be appreciated

Charlie, my original owner 96's hoses have yellow "upper" and "lower" letters.

They also have CIP 01 26 96 CIP (January 26, 1996?) on the underside of both hoses in yellow characters. There are no other markings on these hoses.

My surge tank has a date of 1386 (very faint and hard to photograph), which I believe translates to May 17, 1996. My car only shows a build date of 6/96 on the door jamb sticker, so the tank could've been manufactured anywhere from 2 - 6 weeks prior to the build date of my car. Where did you find your specific build date?

Pat, everything you sent me seems to be in line date code wise.

Here is another spot for a date code on the surge tank. If you look to the left of your surge tank you will see a 96 in a circle surrounded by five dots. I am sure that this means a May 1996 date on the Surge Tank. On my Surge Tank I have a 94 in a circle with five dots for a May date code.

I have photos of another 1996 that has a build date of January 1996 and the hoses have a September 1995 date code on them. This 1996 has a surge tank casting date of 95 with 11 dots for November 1995 and a Julian date code of 3135 (November 9, 1995).

Appears to be a good lag time with the hoses of at least 2-3 months. Is the date on the hoses imprinted and cover with yellow paint or just stamped in yellow?

I have established the build date of August 4, 1994 for my Corvette from documents that I obtained. From what I am told, this information has been purged from GM's system due to age. I know that my 1995 Corvette was the 139 regular production unit manufactured. This was either the first or second day of the 1995 production run. There were 94 preproduction 1995 units manufactured, with VIN 000001 being assigned in April 1994.

Is the date on the hoses imprinted and cover with yellow paint or just stamped in yellow?

It appears to me to be stamped in yellow. There is no embossing or raised characters on the rubber itself, and you cannot detect where the codes are by passing your finger over them.

And no problem, I'm happy to help however I can. I really enjoy the interesting C4 info you're gathering, and learning more about my car.

Keep one thing in mind: it's very possible that a feature like this could have varied even within any particular model year.

I also have a low mileage, late production '96 (204xx) with similar details as Pat:
Upper hose dated 03/07/96
Lower hose dated 11/01/95 - a little early here
date code on tank of 1416 - 3 days later than Pat's
96 in the circle with 5 dots

Jim, thanks for the response, Your information is of great value to the survey. We are trying to correct the 94-96 Judging Manual on this topic.

Yes the lower hose seems early,over six months, but under normal conditions they are running two -three months ahead of build date.

The dots indicating the month and agreeing with the stamped Julian date are a recent discovery.

Charlie, I don't know if it matters but in looking again at my lower hose it is dated 01 12 96, whereas the top hose is dated 01 26 96. You can see both dates in my pic above.
