'64 rear license plate area hardware

Can someone explain or post photos of the screws that are correct for attachment of the rear license plate bezel and the license plate itself.

The AIM shows 4 attachment points for the bezel: 2 horizontal screws at the lower edge of the vertical surface and 2 vertical screws in the upper horizontal surface of the bezel. There are 2 additional holes for attaching the license plate to the body and for this there are cutouts at the upper edge of the vertical portion of the bezel.

The AIM diagram, section 14, sheet B2.00 shows and lists only 1 screw, #161901 (lower right hole) for the bezel and doesn't mention the license plate at all. The Judging guide describes the bezel being attached by "two cad or zinc plated pan head slotted screws", and the license plate "fasteners are flat head, slotted self-tapping screws with integral flat washers".

Is the Judging Guide remiss in mentioning only "2 screws" to attach the bezel when there are actually 4? Are the license plate screws different than the bezel attachment screws ("pan head" verses "flat head")? The description of the license plate attachment screws doesn't make sense to me. A "flat head screw", according to my understanding, would be a counter-sunk screw (flat on top and tapered below to the threaded portion), and that makes no sense if there is an "integral flat washer".

Hi Doug, my 64 uses 4 #10 philips pan head screws to attach the bezel The head measures .365, is a self tapping type screw. The license plate screws (2) are pan head with a slot and captured washer. Believe Michael Hanson and Alan Drake have great photos of these. Dan

      Doug,

The four screws used to secure the bezel to the body are similar to what is described but are phillips head, not slotted. They are found on the AIM page that you mentioned.

The license plate attaching screws, 3794162, are slotted with attached/loose plain washer as Dan described. They were not installed at the St Louis plant but shipped in the IP compartment which is why they are not shown on the body assy page. (see items shipped in the car)

By the way, the nylon nuts used for the license plate bezel attachment are not the same as those used for the license plate.

            Hi Michael,
I've been traveling and won't return until July 3rd so can't look at what I have installed until then. I think I recall that the other, non-license plate plastic nuts are split 4 ways while the license plate plastic nuts are split in 2 halves. Is that correct? Aren't they also different sizes? As I recall the square holes that these nuts push into are different sizes, so they aren't interchangable.
            Thanks-Doug

Doug surprised myself, had a picture of those, are these the comparison you need?

Great photo Alan. No doubts now about what I should have. As soon as I return from this business trip I will check to see what I have. Thanks for the photo.
