    1960 Blow out question

    Hi,

I have not posted in quite a while but had a question that may be a little unusual but I will ask it anyway. I have been fortunate and have never had a tire blow out at any speed in my 60 Vette. My question is: Has anyone reading this ever had a blow out at higher speeds (greater than 50mph)? If so, how does a 50+ year old car react to a simple blow out? It has also been a long while since I had a blow out in a new car but is there any significant difference between a 60' Vette and a newer car at higher speeds? Are there any good tips to know?

I know this is a different kind of question but I always wanted to know and be prepared.

    Thanks,
    Scott Scearce

Not a blowout..but I was driving a '59 when the rear left tire and wheel went flying off at about 70. The car went into a spin and I ended up stopped sideways in the middle of highway 270 near St.Louis. Very scary..never found the wheel and tire. only real damage was a piece of fiberglass knocked out I think in front of the wheel well and a drum flattened.

Typically Blowouts are not as radical as the heighth difference is not so great...but can pull the car left or right.

i blew out a right front on my 61 a while back, was going about 70 and felt a new vibration so i let off a bit, it blew shortly after that, about 60, sounded like it was gonna tear the nose off, it only bent the splash shield a little, about 20 years ago our old buddy brain futo blew a front tire on his 65 at hiway speed and it took the whole right front off, i no longer run radials that are 4 years or older on my cars and trucks

And above all, do NOT touch the brake pedal. Back off the throttle slowly and hang on. Right rear went flat at 75 on the interstate.
