    67 Power Steering Pump Leaks

I have been going crazy trying to figure out the very slow static leak from my remanufactured C2 power steering pump. It is a correct pump with the original type reservoir.

After parking, overnight there is always a few little drops of fluid on the floor. I checked all the hoses and connections, as well as felt around the reservoir seal to the pump, no leak.

The outside of the pump part of the reservoir seems to be always wet with fluid but the reservoir extension above is dry, so I think the leak is coming from the joint between the two.

Has anyone run into this before, and is there an easy fix?

I have been reviewing remanufactured replacement pumps, and the pictures of them seem to have some type of mastic at the joint in the reservoir. I always thought that that joint was brazed, and had no mastic like mine.

The reservoir can just slips over the pump housing and is sealed by a big o-ring. It is possible the that the o-ring was pinched on assembly to the pump housing and is allowing small quantities of PS fluid to leak past the ring. There should not be any need for mastic or other type sealant.

The sheet metal reservoir itself is of brazed construction. If the braze is defective, there could be leaks where the return spout meets the reservoir, or where the reservoir cap extension meets the body of the reservoir. The following picture shows the various possible leak points.

      Jim,

It is one of those early "long neck" reservoirs, and I've check all the areas A,B, & C in your picture, no leaks. The very slight leak appears to be coming from the joint between the neck and the can of the reservoir.
