    65 327/300 w/AC waterpump bolts & brackets

Having some confusion on my waterpump bolts finish.

Was the water pump put on when the engine was assembled and painted along with the mounting bolts?

Then were the bolts taken out (on the RH side) and the air cond brackets installed (it takes longer mounting bolts for this)?

I am trying to figure out the sequence of all this and note that with a different set of bolts on the RH side to mount the pump before the ac bracket is added they will not go into the engine block to hold the pump so please help me out on which bolt gets which finish, were the RH bolts black as shorter ones were originally installed, then changed out when the ac brackets were installed for longer mounting bolts and these were not painted? Were the ac brackets mounted on the wp (they were already painted black) and then got orange overspray on them as the waterpump was now painted?

    Thanks for your help/clarification

    Jim -

The water pump was installed and painted at the engine plant; all four bolts were orange when the engine arrived at St. Louis.

On the Engine Dress Line at St. Louis, on an A/C car, they removed the two RH water pump bolts, pitched them, and installed the front compressor bracket with two new bolts (different lengths) and lockwashers (see your Assembly Manual, section C60, sheet C1, items #4, #7, and #8). Also, they removed one of the front two exhaust manifold bolts and replaced it with a stud, and removed the forward-most of the center exhaust manifold bolts and replaced it with a longer bolt (item #13) when they installed the lower compressor bracket. All of the compressor brackets were flow-coat primed black at St. Louis prior to installation.

A simple way to decode the Assembly Manual sheets is this - any item that has a part number called out on the illustration was installed at St. Louis; in the case of the two water pump bolts, that means the two that came on the engine were removed and replaced by the bolts shown in the illustration.

Jimmy --- while you're at it, I hope you're installing the correct lower horizontal compressor bracket, # 3841696, and not the '66-up (w/provision for A.I.R piping) that has a semicircle depression where the pencil is pointed.

        John,
Thanks for your comments and help. Now I can do it correctly as i was stumped. Your knowledge is beyond my brains comprehension and capacity! Thanks again.

        Wayne,
Original bracket with the correct mounting bolts still in place. Also the compressor is dated coded E 65, my car shipped out june 08
I still have what appears to be original hoses however I am thinking due to their age and the cost of R12 perhaps i should replace them. What do you think?
